The Mojave is Green

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Thanks to the winter rains, the Mojave Desert is pretty green right now. Grasses and wildflowers have begun to spring forth. Where we live in Apple Valley, the normally brown dirt is now covered with yellow and purple wildflowers. It almost looks like someone spilled a tanker truck of yellow paint in some areas. Additionally at our house, the California poppies are multiplying with each day that passes. On the drive to work in Barstow, the hills and valleys are green with the fresh grass. I suppose that means I will needs to do a little mowing and weed trimming this weekend to keep the growth in check before it gets to high. I hope this doesn’t turn for the worse once everything begins to dry out. What looks pretty today will be kindling for brush fires once dried out.

Close, but no cigar!

Well, for the second time this year they predicted snow and for the second time this year, we just missed it. The mountains out our front door show we were actually within just a few hundred feet of getting the white stuff, but missed out again. Renee was not happy and I am sure Jesse wouldn’t have minded a snow day either. They say we have another chance coming up, but I won’t hold my breath.

I can see clearly now….

The smoke is almost completely gone from the valley and I was able to see a beautiful sunrise on my drive to work this morning. I worked outside over the weekend and though smoky still, it was much better than previous days. We even managed a little rain on Saturday which was a tremendous help to the air and especially the guys on the front line fighting the fires.
